Elegant Rheingau Riesling Kabinett from Organic Estate
The Balthasar Ress Hattenheimer Schützenhaus Riesling Kabinett 2023 is a superb German Riesling from the celebrated VDP estate in the Rheingau. Hand-harvested from the Hattenheimer Schützenhaus vineyard, this wine embodies the finesse, minerality and balance for which Balthasar Ress is known. The estate has been converting to organic viticulture, underscoring its commitment to sustainable winemaking.
Tasting Profile and Character
-
Colour & Nose: Pale straw-yellow with delicate green reflections. On the nose, it offers fresh gooseberry and herbaceous notes, mingled with floral undertones and subtle citrus.
-
Palate: Juicy and balanced, with a graceful interplay between gentle residual sweetness and vibrant acidity. Fine herbal spice and a whisper of minerality underline the bright fruit character.
-
Finish: Light, refreshing and easy to drink, with lingering citrus, mint, and a clean mineral thread.
Winemaking & Vineyard
The grapes are carefully selected by hand and transported in small vats. After a 12-hour maceration to extract aromatic compounds, they undergo spontaneous fermentation. The wine is then matured for around seven months in a combination of stainless-steel tanks and wooden barrels to preserve its delicate structure.
The Hattenheimer Schützenhaus vineyard (“first site” / VDP Erste Lage) is located west of Hattenheim, above the Pfaffenberg, on steep loess and loam soils with loess-clay and slate. This terroir provides excellent water retention and a balanced nutrient profile, resulting in Rieslings with refined acidity and expressive fruit.
