A historic Shiraz that allies prodigious concentration to considerable elegance and sense of detail the magic of ancient vines. Youthful aromas of blackberry, raspberry and pepper give way to darker notes of tar, spice and liquorice. The structure is simultaneously monumental and refined. A true tour de force.

Producer

Langmeil is one of the Barossas great modern success stories, although its recent achievements are built on ancient roots. The first vines were planted on the estate in 1843 by a German settler, Christian Auricht, and a winery was in operation here from 1932 to 1988. The property was bought in 1996 by the local Lindner and Bitter families, and they set about meticulously restoring both its buildings and its reputation. Amazingly, the 1843 vines are still alive and producing; they are believed to be the oldest Shiraz vines in the world.

Vineyard

This wine comes from the oldest vines in Australia, and probably the oldest Shiraz/Syrah vines in the world. This dry-grown plot of just over a hectare was resuced from a period of neglect when the current owners bought the property. The vines are planted on alluvial loam and red clay over limestone and ironstone, with roots descending fifteen metres into the soil. The grapes were harvested on March 2nd.

Winery

The bunches were destemmed and then fermented relatively cool in open tanks for seven days with twice-daily pumpovers, before being basket pressed. Sixty-nine percent of the wine completed fermentation in new French oak hogsheads and barriques, where it also went through malolactic. The remainder was transferred to older oak after fermentation, and both components were matured for twenty-four months in barrel. Duing this time the wine clarified naturally and was bottled without fining or filtration.
