This 20th vintage release is Wayne Stehbens’ last vintage in his 39 years as Katnook’s winemaker. This benchmark ‘Coonawarra Cab’ is only made in the very best vintages, and is a hand selection from specific rows in specific blocks. The first vintage was 1991, released in 1996 to commemorate the centenary of the first vintage made in the Katnook woolshed. Odyssey has won many international awards and is listed in the ‘Outstanding’ category of the prestigious Langton’s Classification of Australian Wines. It is aged for 37 months: two thirds in French oak, half of which was new, and one third in older American oak. The wine shows an alluring interplay of typical Coonawarra dark berries and plums interwoven with notes of mocha and cedar from the barrel ageing. This will mature gracefully for 20 years.

Producer

Katnook Estates winemaking history stretches back to 1896, when Coonawarras second vintage was made in the Katnook woolshed by Scottish immigrant John Riddoch. In 1971, the Yunghanns family purchased Katnook and the first vines were planted soon after, with the first vintages of fruit sold to neighbouring wineries. In 1980, the first wines were made under Katnook Estate label. The multi-award winning Wayne Stehbens has made the wines since that first vintage, possibly making him Australias longest serving employed winemaker.

Vineyard

The grapes come from vines aged between thirty and thirty-five years, spur pruned with a vertically managed canopy, and planted at 1,450 vines per hectare on classic terra rossa over limestone soil. They were harvested in several passes between mid-March and mid-April.

Winery

The must was fermented for 5-7 days at 22-27ºC in stainless steel tanks. before being drained and pressed. The wine was matured for thirty-six months in new oak, with eighty-five percent French and fifteen percent American wood.

Taste

Outstanding young aromas of mulberry, cassis and plum are interwoven with vanilla, mocha and smoke. The palate, while impressively concentrated, remains beautifully seamless and symmetrical, with a balance that ensures great drinking now or in fifteen years time.

Press

Has been accorded the full Odyssey treatment, matured for 34 months in a mixture of French and American barriques, 70% new; a full-bodied wine, with abundant blackcurrant and mulberry fruit, and tannins that have not been silenced by the protracted barrel ageing. 94 points, James Halliday Australian Wine Companion
