Yalumba The Strapper Grenache Shiraz Mataro 2013

The Strapper, Barossa Valley GSM is not the showy type, rather the wine that the winemakers drink, when they're not having a Riesling or an ale. Authentic Barossa Shiraz is sandwiched between the understated fragrant perfume of Grenache and the earthy, rustic tannins of Mataro - a well bred, strapping and savoury wine.

Yalumbas Samuels Garden collection celebrates Yalumbas direct lineage to Australias first vine plantings, some of which could be found in Samuel Smiths garden 166 years ago. These wines demonstrate the diversity and quality of the Barossa.

The GSM blend is a stalwart of the Barossa. The three red varieties have been planted in the region for nearly 170 years and in the past were commonly blended to make fortified tawny port style wines. After World War II the same blend started to become popular in table wines. Grenache Shiraz Mataro is a bit of a mouthful - hence the birth of the colloquial GSM.

VINTAGE CONDITIONS The 2012/13 growing season opened with a drier than average winter, followed by a much drier than average spring and summer. These conditions produced lighter weighted crops with much smaller bunches and berries that were full of flavour. Although the summer was warm, it was without extremes and the nights were relatively cool, helping to maintain the freshness, the aromatics and a pristine fruit profile

WINEMAKING/VITICULTURE The three GSM varieties are picked separately for this wine and fermented in small batches - some in oak vats and some in stainless steel. The subsequent wine is aged in a mixture of large oak vats, small oak vats, puncheons and smaller oak barrels, to allow it to develop without the influence of a lot of oak flavour but to increase in textures and complexity.

TASTING NOTES Deep garnet in colour, this is a wine of many layers. It shows licorice, blackberry and plum, supported by notes of sandalwood and white pepper. A robust palate, full of chocolate and juicy Satsuma plum with a gravely tannin finish make it a great accompaniment to BBQ T-bone and  seasoned wedges.
