Producer Note

Established by Kym Teusner and Michael Page in 2001, Teusner’s philosophy is to produce only exceptional, affordable wines by being very selective about the fruit, which is sourced from old, well maintained vineyards in Barossa. These vineyards reliably produce balanced, complex fruit which are guided, with minimal input, into stunning wines. Kym decided to make the Righteous Shiraz because he wanted to showcase his own expression of what he considers the ultimate Barossa Valley Shiraz style...intense, powerful and long-lived.

Vintage

Good winter rains built soil reserves and combined with a cooler than average spring temperatures, the vines grew slowly but were in good health. Véraison took place in January and February 2017, as the Barossa experienced average temperatures and two short bursts of high temperatures. Two well-timed rain events in late January and early February kept vines healthy. March saw an Indian summer, which lasted until late April. This was perfect for consistent ripening of the grapes, with good colour development and natural acidity.

Vineyard

The highlight here is the age of the Grenache vines, which are between 65 to 130 years old and are mostly in bush vine format, on their own rootstocks. The fruit is sourced from several subregions, but Ebeneezer has the oldest vines - the exact age of the vines is not 100% certain, suffice to say that three generations have seen them grow.

Winemaking

Oak was not used in the vinification of this blend to showcase the freshness and vibrancy. Fermentation took place between 20 to 30°C in small, open fermenters and lasting for seven days with twice daily pumpovers. Blended straight after the vintage in the tank, followed by naturally occurring malolactic fermentation. As soon as it was clarified, it was bottled in order to preserve its freshness. Both Grenache and Mataro have the ability to taste beautiful in youth and as they age, they become more interesting, developing savoury and earthy profiles.

Tasting Note

A juicy, spicy and flavoursome red overflowing with red and black ripe, berried fruits, cured meat and lifted sweet spice. Savoury on the palate with gentle tannins which hold it all together seamlessly.

Serving Suggestion

This is delicious served slightly chilled with rich Indian curries or gourmet burgers.
