El Alto Parcel Malbec has its origin in a 2.70-hectare selected parcel from our Finca El Alto's block No. 10, located at 1.000 meters (3,280 feet) above sea level in the Ugarteche sub-region of Luján de Cuyo. This vineyard was planted in 1969 as the result of a massal selection of old pre-phylloxeric Malbec from Vistalba. It is own rooted, low-density spaced (1850 plants per hectare) and flood irrigated. The soil is clay and has gravel from 1 meter (3 ft) deep onwards.
These type of soils together with the mild climate and its cool nights, originate sweet and ripe tannins.
This wine is the result of a microvinification in barrels from these very limited-release lots. When they enter into the winery, the grapes undergo a double sorting table, first bunches and then in a vibratory table, by berries. Second-used French oak 225 liters (59 US gal lqd) barrels are filled with 170 kilograms (375 lb) of pure-clean berries, which are immediately re-caped and sent to a special room temperature controlled at around 20°C (68ºF) where the alcoholic- wild culture -and malolactic fermentation take place.
To make a soft extraction, the barrels are rolled daily for 10 to 15 days. Then, the wine is racked to new French oak barrels where it is aged for 14 months. This artisanal vinification method ensures that grapes are handled gently and all the process is carried out by gravity.
