With its warmer climate and a local variant of Sangiovese – Prugnolo – Vino Nobile offers a richer, headier experience than Chianti to the north. The wines have been made for at least 1,200 years; Antinori joined the party in typically impressive style in 1990. The La Braccesca estate straddles Vino Nobile and the neighboring appellation, Cortona, which is proving Italy’s most successful appellation for Syrah.
Tuscany and Umbria are the regions where Antinori has the highest concentration of vineyards, totaling almost 1,400 hectares of prime sites. Some of the wines – Badia a Passignano, Pèppoli, Tignanello, and Solaia – are each the product of a single estate, while Villa Antinori and the Vin Santo are blends of selected lots from several of the family’s vineyards, including the flagship Tenuta Tignanello site.
